Super Visa insurance requirements
IRCC requires every Super Visa applicant to hold private medical insurance that meets four specific conditions. Here's exactly what the policy must cover — and the documents to bring to the border.
The four IRCC requirements
- At least $100,000 in coverage. The minimum; $150K–$200K is wise for visitors over 65.
- Valid for one year from the date of entry. 365 consecutive days from arrival, not from purchase.
- Covers healthcare, hospitalization, and repatriation. Repatriation (returning the insured home if they die or need evacuation) is mandatory.
- Issued by an approved insurer. A Canadian insurer, or — since 28 January 2025 — an OSFI-authorized foreign insurer.
What to bring to the border
Carry the policy certificate or insurer letter showing the insured's name, coverage amount, effective and expiry dates spanning 365 days, and confirmation of the three required benefits. CBSA officers can request it on arrival.
Common reasons applications are refused
- Coverage term that doesn't span a full year from the arrival date.
- A policy that excludes repatriation.
- An insurer that isn't Canadian-licensed or OSFI-authorized.
